Day-by-Day Itinerary
Welcome to Tanzania - Preparation & Briefing
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you are warmly welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The drive introduces you to Tanzania’s beauty green landscapes, village life, and the first glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro rising proudly in the distance.
In the evening, you meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing covering the route, safety procedures, and equipment check. This is a moment of excitement, preparation, and mental connection to the journey ahead. Rest well, your adventure begins tomorrow.
Machame Gate (1,800 m) → Machame Camp (3,000 m)
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you'll drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, where you'll complete park registration before meeting your mountain crew. Once everything is ready, your Kilimanjaro adventure begins through the lush rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, colorful birds, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The trail climbs steadily, allowing you to settle into a comfortable hiking pace while enjoying the fresh mountain air.
By late afternoon, you'll arrive at Machame Camp, where your tents will already be set up by the crew. After a freshly prepared dinner, your guides will brief you on the next day's trek before you spend your first night on Africa's highest mountain.
Machame Camp (3,000 m) → Shira Camp (3,840 m)
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind as you enter the beautiful moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper, passing giant heather plants, volcanic rocks, and open landscapes with your first panoramic views of Kibo Peak. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes less dense, giving way to wide mountain scenery.
You'll reach Shira Camp in the afternoon, where you can relax, enjoy a hot meal, and watch the sun set over the Shira Plateau. Your guides will check everyone's condition before another peaceful night on the mountain.
Shira Cave Camp (3,840 m) → Lava Tower (4,630 m) → Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland & Alpine Desert
Today's trek follows the important "climb high, sleep low" principle for better acclimatization. After breakfast, you'll gradually ascend toward Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, where you'll stop for lunch depending on the group's pace. The higher altitude and rocky alpine landscape offer a completely different experience from the previous days.
After spending time at Lava Tower, you'll descend to Barranco Camp, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude more effectively. Surrounded by giant senecio plants and located beneath the famous Barranco Wall, this is one of the most scenic camps on the Machame Route.
Barranco Camp (3,960 m) → Karanga Camp (4,035 m)
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you'll begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most memorable sections of the Machame Route. Although it looks steep from below, it is a straightforward scramble with the guidance of your experienced mountain guides. Once at the top, you'll enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak, the Karanga Valley, and the surrounding mountain landscape.
The trail continues across rocky ridges and small valleys before reaching Karanga Camp in the afternoon. After a hot lunch, you'll have time to rest, rehydrate, and prepare for the final ascent to Barafu Camp on the following day.
Karanga Camp (4,035 m) → Barafu Camp (4,640 m)
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today's trek is shorter but takes you to a much higher elevation as you make your way to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The trail passes through a rocky alpine landscape with very little vegetation, offering impressive views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding glaciers.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you'll enjoy a hot lunch before organizing your summit gear with the help of your guides. In the evening, your lead guide will provide a detailed summit briefing, followed by an early dinner and a few hours of rest before the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.
Barafu Camp (4,640 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Mweka Camp (3,100 m)
Distance: 19 km
Hiking Time: 11–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone & Rainforest
Your summit adventure begins shortly after midnight. After tea, coffee, and a light snack, you'll leave Barafu Camp and begin the slow climb under a sky filled with stars. Following the "pole pole" pace, you'll reach Stella Point (5,756 m) at sunrise before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photos at the summit, you'll descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and a hot meal. Once refreshed, you'll continue descending to Mweka Camp, where a well-earned dinner and overnight stay await after the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb.
Mweka Camp (3,100 m) → Mweka Gate (1,640 m)
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you'll begin the final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail is gentle, and the warmer temperatures make for a comfortable walk as you enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest one last time.
Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you'll complete the park exit formalities and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a hot shower, celebrate your achievement, and relax after successfully reaching the Roof of Africa.
Journey Home or Next Adventure
After breakfast or lunch, your journey continues according to your travel plans. If you're heading home, our driver will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. If you've booked a Tanzania safari or a Zanzibar beach holiday, we'll take you to your next destination so you can continue exploring the beauty of Tanzania. We hope to welcome you back for another adventure with us
